In this country, box spring beds in the so-called Scandinavian or European structure, which are characterized by three components, are predominantly widespread. There is also the American structure in which only two bed components are used. In the following article we will introduce you to the various individual parts of the box spring bed and explain their function.

How is a box spring bed constructed?

The elementary components of the box spring bed include:

  • Box
  • Mattress (also: top mattress or box spring mattress)
  • Topper (also: top mattress or topper mattress)

The classic box spring bed also has a headboard, which makes a significant contribution to the overall appearance and charisma of the bed. The spectrum ranges from (extra) high to (extra) wide upholstered headboards in simple or elaborate designs to naturally charming solid wood headboards.

Box of the box spring bed

In the box spring bed, the box replaces the slatted frame, which is usually used as a spring base in conventional bed systems. For this purpose, the box is equipped with a spring core inside, which can be designed as a Bonell spring core or as a (barrel) pocket spring core. Sometimes you can read in the description of box spring systems that the box is equipped with a wave base. Compared to a real innerspring, the adaptability of wave base springs is usually rather moderate, which can have a negative effect on lying and sleeping comfort.

The design of the box determines which support is offered by the bed. This must be tailored to your body weight. A firmer box is also suitable for use by lighter people, because the mattress and topper that lie on it ensure that they sink in well if they are designed for it.

Depending on the bed model, there is more or less free space below the spring core in the box – sufficient ventilation of the box spring bed is always guaranteed.

The box receives stability from a robust frame, which can be made of wood or metal. For an attractive look, the box is provided with a cover fabric on the sides.

The bed feet are also located on the underside of the box. Depending on the model, these are more or less pronounced and thus influence the overall appearance of the bed. With some box spring beds, an additional frame is attached below the box, which completely closes the bed at the bottom.

Box spring mattress

A mattress lies on top of the box by the box spring bed. Like the box, this is often equipped with a spring core (Bonell or barrel pocket spring core) in order to achieve the springy lying feeling that is typical and desired for this type of bed. Alternatively, cold foam or latex mattresses are now also available as top mattresses for box spring beds. This means that some of the springy box spring properties are lost, but at the same time an even better adaptation to individual requirements for maximum lying and sleeping comfort is possible.

As with mattresses that are used in conventional bed systems, top mattresses for box spring beds are sometimes produced in different degrees of hardness, which are suitable for people with different body weights and needs.

The cover of the mattress on the box spring bed is often designed in such a way that the outside has the same cover material or cover material as the box. Occasionally the upholstery fabric of the mattress also differs in color from the fabric of the box and thus sets high-contrast accents that additionally underline the design of the bed. Since the top mattress does not actually serve as a bed surface, it also works very well without sheets, which means that the typically desired, multi-layered box spring look is retained.

Topper of the box spring bed

The topper is a thinner mattress (up to approx. 10 cm high) that closes the box spring bed at the top and forms the actual lying surface of the bed. In this way, it once again has a clear influence on the perceived feeling of lying down and comfort. Depending on the sleeping habits, toppers with a high-quality cold foam or visco foam core – each with a higher density, have proven themselves. .

Latex, Viscolatex, gel and mesh toppers are characterized by very special properties.

A classic combination in the construction of box spring beds is the use of a box with a Bonell spring core and a pocket spring core mattress. Due to the Bonell spring core, the box has an area-elastic effect in this construction, which means that it yields equally over the entire surface when loaded. The mattress has a pocket spring core that has a point-elastic effect. Here, a precise adjustment takes place at the points where the mattress is loaded.

A higher support force and improved adaptability is achieved with the box spring bed by combining two pocket spring cores.

Mattresses with a higher number of springs are often used when it comes to the special requirements of people with a higher body weight. How resilient or load-bearing a mattress is depends not only on the number of springs in the core, but is also largely determined by the type of steel used and the strength of the springs.

In the following article we explain important details and background information on the degree of hardness in box spring beds and provide you with further information on this topic.

Basic knowledge of degree of hardness

For mattresses and box spring beds, degrees of firmness are marked with the letter “H” in connection with a number (1-5). The hardness information can be found accordingly: H1, H2, H3, H4 and H5. With box spring beds, the degree of hardness of the top mattress / mattress usually determines the degree of hardness for the entire bed. If the mattress is designed with a degree of hardness H2, it is also referred to as a box spring bed in H2.

What is a degree of hardness?

According to the definition, the mattress degree of hardness H is the measure that indicates the hardness of a mattress. The number behind the H should be used to read how hard or soft a mattress is. The degree of hardness is measured at the center of the mattress.

Are there standards for the degrees of hardness?

It can often be read that the degree of hardness H1 is soft, the degree of hardness H2 is medium, the degree of hardness H3 is hard and the degree of hardness H4 is very hard. However, this classification can quickly be misleading. Above all, it is not suitable for making a mattress or box spring bed selection based on personal reclining preferences. Conversely, “I like to sleep softly” does not mean that purchasing an H1 mattress is the best choice. The desire for a very firm mattress can have an equally unfavorable effect if an H4 or H5 model is chosen for people with a low body weight.

Choice of mattress / choice of box spring bed

Regardless of how the firmness of a mattress or a box spring bed is defined by the manufacturer or provider, the only decisive factor is that the mattress fits you, your individual requirements and your personal sleeping habits and preferences:

The box spring bed / mattress you have chosen is “right” if your body is carried in such a way that you can lie and stand up in a relaxed and natural position without pain. The weight should be evenly distributed, which is the case when the mattress (of the box spring bed) gives way in the areas where the pressure is highest – the shoulders and hips / buttocks. At the same time, the rest of the body (trunk, legs) must be given adequate support. If the body lying on the side of the ergonomically correct mattress is viewed, a straight line can be drawn from the head to the tailbone. There are no clear spaces between the body and the base due to insufficient sinking behavior.

The mattress is too firm or too hard when it is no longer possible to sink in. This is usually the case if the degree of hardness chosen is too high for your own body weight. In this constellation, the body only rests on the sleeping pad, which leads to an unnatural upward curvature of the spine.

If the mattress is too soft, all parts of the body will sink into the mattress and receive little or no support. Since the hip / buttock area exerts the most pressure, this is where the body sinks the deepest. The spine cannot maintain its natural double S shape and sags downwards.

When choosing a box spring bed or mattress, the degree of firmness is not very important, as individual physical requirements such as body length or different body parts (wide pelvis, wide shoulders, narrow hips) are not taken into account. If in doubt, it is always advisable to seek professional advice on the selection.

What are the meanings of the manufacturer’s hardness specifications?

The degrees of firmness of mattresses and box spring beds are by no means standardized and are defined very differently from manufacturer to manufacturer and from provider to provider. For this reason, it is not possible to make a simple comparison between two H2 box spring beds or two H2 mattresses.

As a concrete decision-making aid, the degree of hardness defined by the manufacturer is therefore only of little use.

Degree of hardness information

Originally, they were designed for use in luxury hotels, where almost night after night other people with very individual needs should find restful and relaxing sleep.

For those who have not yet dealt with box spring beds, the configuration or composition of a double bed that is suitable for both partners is sometimes quite difficult. To make it easy for you to find your dream box spring bed that perfectly meets both your own needs and those of your partner, we have put together some basic information for you on this page.

The right degree of hardness for the box spring bed

The firmness of box spring beds is always given together with weight recommendations. If both people are in the same weight range, the choice is usually quite easy.

But what if one partner weighs less than the other? Do you then need a box spring double bed with one half of the bed configured with a low degree of firmness and the other half with a higher degree of firmness?

The answer to this question is basically: “No.”, because it depends on the specific bed system and its composition: Often times, a higher degree of hardness can also be used by a person with a lower body weight without any problems.

In the case of very large differences in weight, different sleeping habits or different preferences in terms of the strength of the sleep system, it is usually worthwhile to look for a bed solution that is individually suitable for both people. In addition to the ergonomic suitability of a sleeping pad or the correct body positioning, our personal perception also plays an important role in whether lying and sleeping are judged as pleasant and relaxing. Even with an optimally bedded body with ideal pressure relief and support, it can happen that the perceived feeling of lying is too hard or too soft, which has a detrimental effect on well-being and relaxation.

Different sleeping habits – topper choice

When choosing a topper for a box spring bed, in addition to individual preferences, sleep behavior is of great importance. Restless sleepers will not experience a restful night with a thermoelastic viscose foam topper. Where do you sleep better: on a feather pillow, the loose filling of which you can crumple and shape as you like, or on a neck support pillow, the given shape of which supports your head? Susanne W. (name changed by the editors) makes the self-experiment for us. She sleeps on her side and has been using a feather pillow for a long time, which she “crumbles” in whatever way she feels is comfortable. She receives a neck support pillow from us, with which she should test whether she can sleep better and more restfully with it.

The self-test

The self-test is documented using a 14-day sleep diary. At the beginning and at the end, a comparable questionnaire on sleeping and lying quality is filled out. Susanne reports on her self-experiment:

Day 1:
I am a little skeptical whether I will have a good night on the static neck support pillow. After all, I am used to adjusting my pillow and changing it again and again so that I am comfortable. The night is actually not going very well. The pillow is too flat, so I have to put my hand under it to get the height reasonably right. As soon as I change my lying position in my sleep and pull my hand out, I wake up. With neck pain on my left side, I get up in the morning pretty exhausted. I suspect that the pillow is more suitable for back sleepers or people with narrow shoulders. In the diary I record: “Head position uncomfortable, neck tension, often turned around …”

Day 2:
I was told that the body first has to get used to changes in the bed. So I give the pillow another chance. I find it pleasant that I don’t have to shake the pillow up and squash it before I lie down on it. The lying position is actually very comfortable – it would only be ideal if it didn’t give way so much or if it were just a little higher. I actually slept through the night and I’m feeling better. However, I still suffer from neck tension.

Day 3:
I slept worse again, often turned around and woke up a lot. The left half of my neck is very tense. I’m considering abandoning the test.

Day 4:
This night I will try something: Before going to bed I put a thin blanket under the neck support pillow so that it is a few centimeters higher. Does that help? After the first two days, the neck tension disappeared again towards evening, the ones from yesterday seem to be more persistent: My left neck area is still painful. The night was much better – I even slept through the night. With the raised pillow I was able to bring my head into a comfortable lying position. Unfortunately, the neck tension did not go away overnight.

Day 5:
My neck pain got significantly better over the course of the day. I’ll try the blanket trick again tonight. I feel quite fit in the morning, slept through the night and felt that my head was well supported and comfortable. However, my neck seems to have a different opinion here: The muscle tension is back … I decide to take a break and use my old “crush pillow” again for the next few days. In fact, the tension in the neck area disappeared after two days.

Day 6:
I received a new test neck support pillow, which is a little higher. I bravely dare to try again and hope that the tension won’t come back. Hooray! I slept really well – this pillow actually seems to fit now! It’s so nice to be able to get up without pain and start the day relaxed. I note in the sleep diary: “Sleep well, no pain / tension, head position comfortable.”

Day 7 to 14:
I never thought that you could sleep so well on a preformed pillow! It’s great to just lie down in bed and your head on the pillow in the evening: no more crumpling or squeezing – the head position is immediately comfortable and the pillow adapts well to the shape of my head. I no longer slide my head into too flat a place at night – as often happens with my old pillow – and therefore no longer wake up with tension or have to correct my head position and pillow shape several times.

The neck support pillow has just the right strength, does not give in too much and still feels soft. I am completely satisfied with the new pillow and glad that I got involved in the test. Otherwise, I would never have found that a neck support pillow can be much more comfortable than a “rocking pillow”. Fortunately, I am allowed to keep the test pillow – I would not have given it away either …

Before and after comparison

At the beginning of the test and after 14 days of self-experiment, Susanne filled out a short questionnaire that showed a significant improvement in her sleep quality.

Susanne’s diary shows a clear dissatisfaction before the experiment.

Susanne’s sleep has become much calmer and symptom-free after the 2 weeks.

Our conclusion

As the self-experiment clearly shows, switching from a pillow with loose filling to a neck-supporting pillow with a pre-formed foam core can be worthwhile. It is important that the height is chosen appropriately. You can determine this at home with a soft woolen blanket, which you fold several times until you have achieved a comfortable head position. Then measure the height of the folded blanket – this will give you an idea of ​​the height of the neck support pillow you need.
