Led bulbs are more and more important to the rays. It must be said that they seem to present many advantages: long service life, low power consumption… But at the present time, the Led lamps actually all their promises?
Efficiency: could do better!
According to the report “LED-Beleuchtung der Qualitätsmerkmale” dating from 2009 and realized for the SFOE (federal Office of energy), in actual operation, energy efficiency of led reached 50 and 70 lumens per watt, a performance comparable to that of CFLs. In addition, according to this report, information on the effectiveness of the light bulbs identified on the packaging were sometimes little realistic or fanciful because the observed values reflected performance obtained in the laboratory that were not always representative of performance in a real situation.
However, behind this current mixed, the future of Led looks promising as experts expect a doubling of their luminous efficiency in the next five years.
The LED life… not always high
Theoretically, the Led life is particularly high because it can reach the 50,000 hours of operation, or 50 times the lifetime of a light bulb incandescent.
However, the report of the federal Office of energy shows that such life expectancy can be achieved that the operating unit has a life equivalent to that of the Led only if the heat release is assured but according to experts, in 2009, of many products placed on the market did not meet these two conditions.
LED light bulbs: what impact on health?
Given their low operating temperature, they present no risk of burning and unlike CFL bulbs, it generate any significant magnetic fields. However, some LED bulbs could have an impact on health by having a toxic effect on the retina. They could also create a risk of glare.
For the SFOE, currently, Led lighting can be interesting when the consumer actually arrives to take advantage of the benefits offered by this type of bulb and including their directional light, their very long service life, of their diversity of colors and the very low heat development that they generate.
In the domestic field, the SFOE recommend their use for work or reading luminaire that requires a small amount of light, start and a bright light without heat.
On the other hand, the European Union also recommends their use for fixtures that are used in a common way because cycles extinctions ignitions have little impact on the Led.
Taking into account only the purchase price, the price of LED bulbs is not competitive with that of CFLs, in all cases in our example. The co-op, a 7W Led bulb is sold CHF 39 – while the CFL 8W and a relatively comparable luminous efficiency is sold less CHF 10.-.
On the other hand, if we include the price of electricity and the life expectancy of the bulbs, the price difference is lower. So, for a life expectancy of 25 years, theoretical life of an Led bulb, integrating all of the costs, use a CFL will come back to CHF 61.- and use a bulb LED to CHF 75. –
Remains that within 25 years, the price of LEDs will have evolved down while their light output will be increased substantially. Except for the uses recommended by the SFOE and the Union European is so wait a bit before moving entirely to the Led.
