The top five cities of New Mexico are Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Rio Rancho, Santa Fe, and Roswell. Albuquerque is the largest city in New Mexico and is the 32nd most populous city in the United States. It is situated in the high desert of the Rio Grande Valley at an elevation of 5,312 feet. Santa Fe County borders Bernalillo to the north and contains the city of Santa Fe, which has a population of 83,788. Sandoval County is located on the west side of Bernalillo and contains a number of cities including Rio Rancho, Corrales and Placitas. Sandoval has an estimated population of 131,561. Valencia County lies to the south of Bernalillo and is home to Los Lunas with a population of 23,233. Valencia has an estimated population of 76,569 people. To the east lies Torrance County with a population estimate of 16,511. Other counties include Cibola County located northwest from Valencia with a population estimate of 27,213; Catron County located in west-central New Mexico with an estimated population 762; and Colfax County located in northeastern New Mexico with an estimated population 12,059 people.
Rio Arriba county is located in northern New Mexico and borders both Colorado and Arizona. The county seat is Tierra Amarilla and it has an estimated population 24,921 people according to 2019 estimates. The county was established in 1852 from lands formerly occupied by Native Americans including Apache tribes as well as Navajo people who still live there today. Rio Arriba covers over 5500 square miles making it one of the largest counties by area in New Mexico but also one of its least populated counties due to its remote location within mountainous terrain that can be difficult for travel or development purposes. Despite this it remains a popular destination for outdoor recreational activities such as camping or fishing thanks to its abundance natural resources including rivers like Chama River running through its center.
