Each zip code has a unique five-digit number that is assigned by the United States Postal Service (USPS). The first three digits of the zip code represent the sectional center facility, which is the main post office that provides service to an area. The fourth and fifth digits represent a local delivery area within that sectional center facility.

The largest city in North Carolina, Charlotte, has several zip codes ranging from 28201 to 28297. Other major cities in the state include Raleigh (zip codes 27601 to 27617), Greensboro (27405 to 27429), Durham (27701 to 27717), Winston-Salem (27101 to 27127) and Fayetteville (28301 to 28316). Smaller cities and towns across North Carolina also have their own zip codes, such as Asheville (28801 to 28814), Wilmington (28401 to 28411) and Hickory (28601 to 28645). In addition, there are dozens of unincorporated areas with their own zip codes for rural areas and other locations not serviced by any city or town.
