Greenland, which has been under self-government since June 2009, does little justice to its name: most of the country is covered with land ice. The country has a polar climate, but is located partly south of the Arctic Circle. Nevertheless, it is quite bearable in the summer thanks to the relatively warm water of the Atlantic Ocean on the fjord-rich west and south coast. Temperatures are then between 5 and 18°C. On the night of June 21 to 22, the sun does not set on the Arctic Circle: midnight sun. Inland it is very dry. More precipitation falls on the coast. In winter the mercury can drop to 60 degrees below zero.
