Sint Maarten is a country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands and is the southern part of the island of Sint Maarten. The country has a tropical monsoon climate. Rain mainly falls during short, heavy showers. August to December are the wettest months. February and March are the driest months. The average maximum temperature varies from about 28 degrees in winter to 32 degrees in summer. At night it often does not get colder than about 23 degrees. The temperature of the sea water fluctuates between 26 and 29 degrees. Sint Maarten is located in an area with a risk of tropical storms and hurricanes. The chance of this is greatest in the months of August, September and October. On September 6, 2017, Sint Maarten was hit by hurricane Irma.
