What Light Bulb to Choose

“Let there be light!” And there was light. ” This phrase from the book of Genesis of the Bible makes sense in 1879 when Thomas Edison, according to the research of Joseph Swan, designs a bulb containing a charred, cotton fiber which will be the first functional electric bulb in the world.

Thanks to this discovery, the American inventor allowed men to live “luminously” with darkness. Over the years, the bulbs have improved to provide even more light, and hold with a less harmful effect to the environment. Since January 1, 2013, the say incandescent bulbs have been prohibited for sale. They then leave room for halogen bulbs, bulbs to low energy or CFL and LED bulbs.

The most common models of light bulbs

For many years, nearly 80 years, the incandescent light bulb was the Queen of the lighting. We must also say that she was the only one. It is only towards the end of the 1950s, a new kind of bulbs see the day. It comes to halogen bulbs, which return about the same way as conventional bulbs, but which the filament supports a significantly higher temperature to allow the bulb to have a longer life expectancy. Then the race to the evolution of the bulb is on so that it is more economical while offering a great brightness and respectful of the environment. Today, the most common light bulbs are halogen, CFLs bulbs and LED bulbs (see differences on http://www.legalarmist.com/2016/difference-between-led-and-integrated-led/).

The LED bulb: the must – have for savings

When it comes to LED bulbs, which should have come out of the shadows there is 50 years already, they are the ultimate in lighting. Compared to conventional bulbs, these have an energy consumption very reduced with an efficiency up to 80%, very long life up to 100,000 hours, a good color rendering or a number of very high cycles. These bulbs contain a diode formed two thin semiconductor connected by a thread. Once powered by an electric current, they produce light with electroluminescence. What distinguishes these bulbs from others, is that they can display different colors according to the materials constituting the semiconductors. Unlike conventional bulbs whose power is expressed in Watt, LED bulbs are ranked in ascending order of luminous intensity expressed in Lumen. A traditional light bulb produces 10 to 13 Lumens per Watt. To replace a 40-watt incandescent bulb, then choose an at least 400 Lumens LED bulb.

LED bulbs are available in several units, including the most common (E14, E27, B22 and GU10) can connect directly to the sector. As a result, there is no change of installation to be done to move from a conventional bulb to a LED bulb in these units.

Hold while an LED bulb is more expensive to purchase than another but you will ensure additional thousands of hours of light! Stay not be blocked on the price and dare the investment!

The low-energy bulb and bulb halogen

Halogen bulbs are light bulbs the light produced is identical to that of the incandescent bulb, but consumes less energy. To compare, a 70 Watt halogen bulb illuminates as much as a conventional 100 watt bulb. This kind of bulbs can take all possible forms and be equipped with a wide variety of nerve. Compared to the powerful bulbs of today, this category above doesn’t have a very long life span and still produces a lot of heat (93% of consumed energy is transformed into heat) as the traditional bulb. But halogen bulbs are twice as efficient as incandescent bulbs with their estimated 2 000 to 4 000 hours life expectancy, and the less important deposit of tungsten on the glass walls.

About CFLs that are also known as being of low-energy bulbs, they operate on the same principle as fluorescent or neon lights. Basically, it is a neon folded on itself. This type of bulb has a life expectancy of 6 to 10 times higher than conventional bulbs producing 80% of light for 20% of heat. These CFLs are also recyclable to 97%. A small problem, the starting time can be long for optimal light. Fortunately, there are models with instant ignition. Also, low-consumption bulbs have a lower color rendering.

Dimmable bulbs

Thanks to the advances in technology, it is now possible to provide optimal lighting in every room in the House according to the situations. Only, all bulbs are not housed in the same boat in terms of variability of light intensity. If it is possible to vary the intensity of light on some very low voltage bulbs, 230V halogen and incandescent bulbs, this is not the case for energy saving bulbs. Today, most LED bulbs include this technology. The advantage with this variety, is that they have a great life and support very well of many cycles of power unlike halogen bulbs or CFLs. Dimmable bulbs can suit any type of lighting: ceiling lights, chandeliers, wall sconces, floor lamps, Recessed spotlights, projectors, suspensions and bedside lamps, etc. The most important thing to know about dimmable bulbs is that they function of consorts with light dimmers.

If previously these devices allowing to vary the intensity of light in the habitats were major consumers of energy and often the source frequent fire, this is no longer the case. Nowadays, these dimmers are very efficient and offer several advantages. Indeed, using them, they extend the life of the bulbs while reducing their consumption. If conventional dimmers are designed for operating incandescent light bulbs, there are today dimmers working with CFL bulbs and LED bulbs. By reducing the intensity of 10%, the dimmers allow save 10% energy and extend the life of the bulbs twice. With a 75% reduction in light intensity, energy saving amounts to 60% with an extension of the life expectancy of the bulbs up to 20 times.
